Prosecutions pending for corruption

The Department for the Prosecution of Administrative Corruption (DPCA) has prepared cases against a number of individuals including Pedro Peralta, Mayor of Villa Altagracia and former director of Blackouts Reduction Program (PARA), Marco Lara Lorenzo.
Otoniel Bonilla, director of DPCA told reporters that he fully expected a conviction in the case of Peralta. On the case of Lorenzo and PARA, Bonilla said that although at first he thought it was a simple case, it became apparent that it was more complicated as investigations went on into alleged excessive abuse of state resources.
He said researchers found that PARA resources had been used to benefit Lorenzo personally. They found, Bonilla said, evidence of funds being used to benefit his local political organization and to buy vehicles for relatives.
In another vein, the director of DPCA discussed the report issued this week by the U.S. Department of State on drug trafficking and money laundering in the world, saying it agreed with the points made by President Leonel Fernndez in his speech to National Assembly Saturday 27 February.
"Both of them recognized the existence of overtones of corruption in the drug trade through military and police personnel, he said.
