Puerto Plata businessman calls on Goverment to build the cruise port - says Playa Dorada was an error
posted on: Nov 3 2010 11:38 by The Reporter. Viewed 985 times.Puerto Plata businessman, Dr. David Toribio, who now lives in Santo Domingo, firmly believes that the construction of a modern cruise ship and cargo terminal will help “considerably to relaunch the development of Puerto Plata.”

Toribio said that since 1986, in Puerto Plata “we have demanded that the various governments build both works, but so far these hopes have gone unanswered.”
He recalled that when the transatlantic cruise ships “Boheme”, “Southward” and others came “the port was full of tourists, who roamed the streets of our city, shopping at gift shops and other businesses, leaving a large amount of dollars that energized the North Coast economy. “
Toribio made several calculations to show that the arrival of the cruise ships are the backbone needed to restore the economy of Puerto Plata.
He estimated that if every vessel that enters the port brought in around US$200,000 on various spends, with an average of three cruises a week, this would amount to US$600,000 or 25 million pesos a week.
This would be 100 million pesos monthly and 1200 million pesos a year.
Playa Dorada was an "error"
On the other hand, Toribio said it was an error to construct the shopping mall in Playa Dorada, which immediately eliminated the social relationship that had to be established between the community of Puerto Plata and tourists.
He explained that tourists visit a destination not only for holidays in hotels, but also to understand the local culture and environment, something that those responsible for setting up the business in Playa Dorada did not anticipate.

My dear toribio, puerto plata needs more than a cruise ship terminal, it also more than ever needs a new Puerto Plata such as the sugar cane large area (between Playa dorada and the airport )owned mainly by the Central dominican bank. There should be constructed, appartments, condos, hotels, shopping mall, new beaches etc... Just like Punta cana where ALL the tourists seems to go.Now , here there isn't just enough to attract the foreigners, could it be political that some ladrons would like to see Puerto Plata sinks ??????????

when i first came to puerto plata in 2003 the atmostphere was somthing else. everybody happy singing music playing everywhere.the old malecon heaving with people frequenting the old ramshacle cassetas dancing in the streets.then they elected a new president who with very good intentions tried to drag dom rep into the 20th century. spending millions on the malecon ,building new casatas closing the pubs at 12 oclock and in doing so killed it stone dead. what everyone came here for .the back in time way of life , the simple passtimes, above all the atmostphere is gone. the back in time way of life that people came for is no more if they want modern they have it at home. this was the charm of the dom rep. no loud music cars cant play there music no one can go to the petrol stations drink eat and all play there music to see who had the best system sadly i think the damage is done and it will never be the same. what a shame this coupled with tour operators frightening people to death about leaving the hotels has finished player dorada.
