The rain in the province of Puerto Plata on  Sunday afternoon flooded hundreds of homes in some 32 neighborhoods, damaging belongings, killing one man and leaving  several people missing, said the local director of Civil Defense, Hugo Gonzalez Troche.

The official, who did not specify the number of people missing, also said several homes in the city were destroyed by overflowing rivers.

The dead man was identified as Jose Antonio Rafael Santana, 21, who lived in the Los Limones area of the city. He suffered fatal head injuries when a wall collapsed on top of him.

Gonzalez Troche reported that following the rains, landslides started in various areas of the city and La Colorada and also on the highway between Puerto Plata and Navarrete, blocking traffic.

Many streets, particularly around Novia del Atlntico were flooded, driving people from their homes.

Gonzalez Troch added that in his opinion there were more victims of the floods than should have been expected because nothing was being done by the City to prevent construction of homes in unsuitable areas next to rivers.

Barrios affected worst were Los Callejones, Las Flores, Hait, El Javillar, Aguas Negras, Los Coquitos, Los Rieles and Los Rieles de San Marcos, as where Avenidas Manolo Tavrez Justo, Presidente Caamao and 30 de Marzo, Other barrios affected were La Caista, Playa Oeste, Los Domnguez, Las Tres Palmas, San Marcos, Padre Granero, Bello Costero, Buenos Aires, Los Bordas, Las Mercedes as well as other communities.
