Punta Cana International Airport recently opened its second runway and a brand new control tower that will accommodate an important flow of airline traffic.
The new runway is 10,171 feet long and 150 feet wide.
It will be able to manage direct flights from Europe and the US, especially from such cities as New York, Chicago, Miami, Paris, London, Moscow and Sao Paulo.
This is the eighth major expansion the airport facility has undergone since the terminal opened in 1984 as the first private commercial airport in the world.
With these new additions, the Punta Cana airport becomes the only facility of its kind in the Caribbean and Central America with runways that are more than 10,000 feet long.
The runway will be able to handle large wide-body aircraft such as the Jumbo B-747-400; the Airbus A340-600; the B-777, B-767-ER; the and newly launched B-787.
The runway is equipped with the latest generation of lights and it is the first airport in the Caribbean to light the central axis of the runway.
The facility is also equipped with radios, air navigational and AWOS weather systems, similar to those used by major airports around the world.
The Punta Cana airport receives 60% of all tourists arriving by air to the Dominican Republic. Last year, 2,021,658 visited the Dominican Republic through this passenger terminal.
During the January – October period of this year 1.8 million passengers have used this terminal to visit the country.
