Quest for big buttocks causes big problems

The U.S. State Dept confirmed yesterday that the women had suffered complications after attending illegal clinics to have their buttocks enlarged.

Authorities said the women received injections of products that were similar to genuine products, but pirated and mixed up with tile cement and other fillers.
Patricia Cabrera, spokeswoman for the Department of Health in New Jersey, said that infections in the six Dominican women were not only caused by treatment with fake products but also from the local environment where they were injected. Cheap hotels and apartments were used as operating theaters to treat women determined to have larger rears.
The incidence of infections began to be reported in mid February, said Dr. Tina Tan, an epidemiologist at the Health Department, who added that extensive research is underway on the problem.
She said the homemade shots affect the skin and can even cause lung damage. Dr Tan warned that the results could even be fatal.
No arrests were reported in connection with this case.
