Dominican Republic is self-sufficient in the production of meat, both of chickens, pigs, beef, eggs and other types of foods that are used in the "national flag" (typical Dominican food).

Thus consider him some producers who understand that the country has potential not only to produce which consumes the population, but even to export United States and other countries. They consider that Dominican Republic still not is exporting meat by the slow pace of bureaucracy in government institutions that have to do with this subject.

According to producers, in the last year, in Dominican Republic it has been consuming an average of 20,000 heads of cattle, 11,000 pigs, 14 million chickens and 150 million eggs per month.

The President of the Association of small poultry producers of Moca and Licey (Aproamoli), Ambiorix Cabrera, considered Dominican Republic is u000aself-sufficient in the production of meat of chickens and pigs, but now farmers face a problem profitability.

"The problem for us is the cost and that has to be transferred to the consumer," said Cabrera after mean that another upset for producers have been imports without reasons.

He said that imports made to benefit a single group are detrimental to the majority of the people.

He said that although the country is capable of producing 25 million chickens per month, currently there is 14 million.

The country currently 491,800 head of cattle for meat, according to data supplied by the National Directorate of livestock.

Central Bank data indicate that livestock has a share of 3.1 per cent of the 7.8% representing the agricultural sector in the gross domestic product (GDP).

Increase
the President of the Association of producers of u000aChickens and eggs, Wilfredo Cabrera, explained that the country is in the capability of producing around 40% more than what it currently produces for export purposes, but that it does not because it has still no market in foreign

He said that the agreement of PetroCaribe, included a portion of the payments which makes Dominican Republic to Venezuela per credit in oil, to make the export of chickens to the country and to date has not been possible.

"The agreement of Petrocaribe, which Venezuela gives a credit Dominican Republic that is then paid a part with agricultural products is in force, but chickens to Venezuela has not be exported because it requires a greater effort on the part of the Government and producers, as well as the Embassy of Venezuela in the country," indicated.

Said that in the country there are facilities and the fixed asset that is required for export of quality production, but u000athat unfortunately can not increase the amount that currently occurs because whenever that increases the producers have to sell at prices below the costs of production.

Reported that the production is currently stable and that the producers are selling the pound of chicken to RD$ 29 to the suppliers, four pesos above the cost of production is Rd $25

Slaughterhouses
Efraín Taboada, administrative Vice-President of meat Shu'ayb Suplidora, said explained that in the country there are about 162 slaughterhouses who sacrifice among 18,500 and 20,000 head of cattle per month, and of these butcheries, only seven serve 85% of the market national.

Said that, according to data of the Ministry of agriculture, in each village there is a slaughterhouse, which are slaughtered between 2 and 3 diariamiamente animals, but the bulk of the demand is accomplished by seven plants.

Export
Efraín u000aTaboada, meat Shu'ayb Suplidora, said that the company is one of being prepared for export, so that he can say that: "there is a political will, but we can say all Government things that take a bureaucratic process to run slowly".

Considered that Dominican Republic has the ability to export beef, but pointed out that to make it sustainable should be a production program to supply the market without any drawbacks.

"If we begin to export and to consume uncontrolled could have problems, because increasing livestock production is not as increase the production of chickens, a 40 days are ready, but grazing takes a time of three or four years.
