Report clears school milk suppliers

After several separate incidents of apparent food poisoning in children after eating their school breakfast, the milk was initially blamed for the illness.
Instead, the investigation has found that transport, poor hygiene, and inappropriate storage are responsible. The team has therefore suggested a program of education for parents, school principals and all those involved in the distribution process of the school breakfast.
The Director of Environmental Health, Nelson Rodriguez, explained that of 129 cases identified with nausea and vomiting all the children were back home within 12 hours with no lasting effects.
He said that only two manufacturing plants, owned by Parmalat and Cepy Cibao, showed deficiencies, but at the time of the incidents, these had not been supplying any milk to the schools.
Meanwhile Education Minister, Melanio Pared Perez said he still awaiting the results of bacteriological tests sent to the U.S. to give a broader view of the problem.
He warned that if such tests did eventually reveal flaws in any of the plants involved in the provision of school breakfast, they would be withdrawn from the program.
He said that for the time being no milk is being distributed and the children are receiving juice and biscuits. He hoped to return to the use of milk which is nutritionally better for children.
