Riots in Puerto Plata

Hooded rioters staged violent protests mid afternoon on Friday, demanding the completion of the sewerage system inaugurated by the Tourism Ministry in 2008 in two Puerto Plata streets. Two arrests were made.

The protesters closed the link between Padre de las Casas and Los Cambero by blocking the road with tires and branches. Many vehicles prevented from passing through had their windows broken.
The National Police attended the scene and were attacked with stones. The police responded to the assault with tear gas and rubber bullets.

The detainees were named as Víctor Manuel Montes and Wandys Díaz Cruz. A spokesman added that the protest was quickly controlled and the neighborhood returned to normal.

The organizers of the protest said that if their demands are not met in a reasonable time, they will take to the streets again to enforce their claims.
