Santo Domingo water supply 60million gallons short

The water deficit in Santo Domingo is about 60 million gallons per day, according to the Co-ordinator of Government Entities in the sector. This represents a shortage of about 15% in the capital.
Representatives of the National Institute of Water Resources (INDRHI), National Institute of Water Supply and Sewerage (INAP), the Water and Sewerage Corporation of Santo Domingo (CAASD) and the Dominican Electricity Generation Management stressed the need to ration water use when they met yesterday.
Luis Salcedo, deputy director of operations CAASD, said yesterday that water production was currently 340 million gallons per day. The shortage is reflected most strongly in Haina-Manoguayabo-Isa Mana, and Duey-Guananico, which mainly supply the western part of Santo Domingo.
According to the official, the recent rains have had almost no effect on supplies.
Mariano Germán, Inapa director, said the drought began to emerge from the second half of last year and he warned that it was essential to minimise consumption to avoid even greater problems in the future.
