School meal poisoning scare starts again

The incident happened at a school in La Piedra, in the community of Las Canas, Villa la Mata, in the province of Sanchez Ramirez.
The students, between 6 and 12 years old, suffered from intestinal problems, vomiting and diarrhea. Teachers reported that pupils began to experience headaches and dizziness in the morning and the symptoms became bad enough to warrant hospitalization.
Yesterday afternoon, only a six year old girl remained in the Silfrido Alba health center, in Fantino, according to reports.
Some parents said they would forbid their children to eat the school meals to prevent further poisoning.
This is the third similar incident recorded in the North so far this year. Recently, a Janei community school in Jarabacoa saw 15 students admitted to medical centers suffering with stomach problems after eating breakfast.
A similar number was affected in a school in San Jose de las Matas.
Given the frequency of cases, the education authorities have chosen to suspend temporarily the supply of milk or juice for breakfast while investigations are carried out.
Other cases of food poisoning have included, among the 100 this year; 2 children in Piky Lora school, Santo Domingo Este, in February; 40 in Maimon, Monsignor Nouel province; 2 in Pablo Barinas school in San Cristobal, in March; and 11 children in Apolinar Perdomo school,
Tamayo.
