The Summit was announced last Thursday by Foreign Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso, who also revealed that President Leonel Fernández had raised the need for each donor country to focus its assistance towards a particular area.
Morales said Fernandez discussed the plan during a meeting with his Taiwanese counterpart Ma Ying-jeou.
He also said that Fernandez spent over an hour with the president of Taiwan, along with Haitian Prime Minister Jean Max Bellerive, Ambassador Fritz Cineas, Presidency Minister César Pina Toribio, Luis Manuel Bonetti and the Economic Planning and Development Minister, Temistocles Montás.
The Foreign Minister stressed that the summit will be used to define the strategy for the reconstruction of Haiti, and that Venezuela's President Hugo Chávez will also be invited to attend.
He said Taiwan’s President asked Fernandez for recommendations on the areas where it could best target assistance to Haiti, and immediately sent to Haiti, food and medicine worth US$5 million.
After the earthquake of January 12, many countries around the world have shown an interest in sending aid of various kinds to Haiti.
The first help for Haiti came from the Dominican Republic, who, besides food and medicine, organized Dominican hospitals to receive and attend to the thousands of injured quake victims, while communication was being restored.
