Term dictatorship returns to schools

Viewed 18 times. The National Council of education (development) recovered the term "dictatorship" to refer to the Government of Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990) in textbooks for children from 6 to 12 years, after a controversial proposal by the Government to change it by the word "regime".
At a meeting held yesterday Thursday, the development approved by six votes in favour and one abstention the reincorporation of the term "dictatorship", which had been replaced at an earlier meeting of the Agency at the request of the Government.
"Are glad with the acceptance of the unanimous amendment to the new wording which includes 'regime or military dictatorship' in the curricular objectives for students in first through sixth Basic." "We believe that this wording acknowledges all sensitivities," said Education Minister Harald Beyer. According to Beyer, texts may use any of the two terms.
When it was approved the replacement of the term "dictatorship", u000aBeyer argued that the word "regime" represented a "wider" concept.
The proposal, sent by mid-2011 and approved in December by the development, caused a stir in Chile and the rejection of human rights institutions and others.
