Most of the Bahoruco Mountain Range is situated in the Dominican Republic’s southwest region, specifically in the provinces of Independencia, Barahona and Pedernales.

Additionally, a large part of the mountain range is located within the “Bahoruco Mountain Range National Park,” an important protected area.

A visit to these mountains is one of the most rewarding experiences a nature-loving visitor will be able to experience in the Dominican Republic.

Found in these mountains are the various types of forests that thrive in the country.

There are important areas of dry forests, specifically on the northern slopes; breathtaking cloud forests, the largest in the country; and endless stretches of pine forests, found throughout the entire mountain range.

The National Park contains one of the most unique ecosystems found in the Dominican Republic.

The area is easily accessible through the use of all-terrain vehicles.

Most travelers access travel to the mountain range through the town of Puerto Escondido.

Prior to entering the National Park there is a checkpoint run by the Ministry of the Environment, where visitors are assigned a mountain guide who will accompany them on their mountain tour.

Visiting the Bahoruco National Park – part of the Dominican Republic’s irreplaceable national heritage – will be an unforgettable experience for the nature-loving visitors.

Cloud Forest

The most striking part of the visit to the Bahoruco National Park is its unique cloud forest, where it seems that time has been frozen in the distant past.

The impressive moss-covered trees are home to a wide variety of orchids and colorful birds.

For more information on the Park, please contact the Vice Ministry for Protected Areas at 809-567-4300, or write to areas.protegidas @ ambiente.gob.do.
