The head of the Ministry of Tourism of the Dominican Republic, Francisco Javier García Fernández, highlighted the strong growth of Dominican tourism, revealing that in the past year 63 new tourism projects had been approved and launched with an investment exceeding 14 billion US dollars .

Garcia Fernandez, who is attending aTourism Fair in Germany, reminded reporters that the  Dominican Republic has been declared the Cultural Capital of Americas.

He said the country is amongst the most visited countries in the world, adding that last January saw an increase of 6.0% of visitors compared to the same period of 2009.

He noted that one reason why we have had a significant rebound is the heavy investment in promoting the Dominican Republic as a tourist destination.

He stressed that the investment by private enterprise in the country is matched by the development of access roads to new tourist destinations.

He reported that there are plans to build 13 major hotels in different parts of the country, several of them in the province of Montecristi, with funds from Israel.
