Tourism up! says Central Bank
posted on: Dec 22 2011 17:50 by The Reporter. Viewed 205 times. The tourism crisis has ended for the Dominican Republic, say many after new figures released by the Central Bank show tourism is up this year by 3.7% compared to last year.

The first 11 months of 2011 brought 4, 290,494 tourists who traveled by air, beating 2010’s 4,135,480 tourists, despite the downturn in tourists from Europe.
Tourism in 2010 generated US$4.2 billion, but in the first 9 months of 2011, US$3.9 billion was generated, which suggests an increase for the year.
According to current plans, US$400 million will be invested in the Dominican Republic in the first few months of 2012 in hotel construction and tourist infrastructure, by Spanish investors.
Dominican tourism bosses are also hoping to push Dominican tourism beyond the typical ‘beach and sun” offerings, with alternative eco-tourism.
