The authorities of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) decided on Saturday to continue the suspension of teaching due to the riots at the academy and locked all entrance doors.

Hundreds of students left the campus affected by the large amount of tear gas fired by riot police, forcing the suspension of teaching.

The protests began yesterday in the UASD and the Northeast Regional University Center (CURNE) leaving a total  of 8 people injured, including a colonel from the National Police.

Meanwhile, The rector, Franklin Garca Fermn,  said that the riots could be the work of various sectors in the University seeking to create an atmosphere of unease and disquiet at the academy, as had been publicly reported.

An architecture student, Enger Rodrguez, was shot in the chin during the troubles in Santo Domingo and admitted to the Cuban Medical Center where he is recovering.

In CURNE, six students and a police officer were injured in the violence there.

The officer was named as  Colonel Juan Luis Sierra Dif, wounded by a stone in the face during the riot.

The riots erupted before noon Friday after Police raided the premises of the Northeast Regional University Center (CURNE) in San Francisco de Macoris, where some leaders of the Student Liberation Front Amin Abel (Felabel) were arrested.

Student leaders explained that their action was prompted by complaints from medical students, about the long periods to which they were assigned internship courses, in addition to members of the Police raided the premises of the Northeast Regional Center (CURNE).
