Meanwhile, National Police reported the deaths of two suspected criminals at the hands of their patrols.
The COE director, general Juan Manuel Mendez said that this year deaths have been reduced by over 50%, given that by the same time last year 36 people had died.
"We expect the figure will not rise, at least that is the aim of the operation we have started. On this occasion we had the co-operation of bikers and we have seen that they have not been the main causes of accidents as in years past.
They have heeded our warnings," he added.
General Mendez said that the operation was being maintained within acceptable limits, saying that the beaches had fully complied with the schedule established from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm.
He said that there had been 78 traffic accidents with 20 deaths and 248 wounded, also there had been two drowning accidents.
The 78 reported traffic accidents recorded since the operation began on Holy Thursday involved 54 motor vehicles and 123 motorcycles.
He stressed that the work carried out with the 22 institutions involved in the operation had been very successful this time and repeated his request for people not to drink alcohol when they intend to drive.
The director of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (AMET), Jos Anbal Sanz Jiminin, highlighted the efforts made by its agents and said he is personally supervising the work throughout the country.
