The president of the Partido Revolucionario Dominicano (PRD), Miguel Vargas, yesterday accepted the presidential candidacy of Hipólito Mejía for the PRD for the national elections next year, thus ending the internal crisis that lasted over a month.
Vargas said he was withdrawing his legitimate aspiration to be the presidential candidate of that party, in search of unity and tranquility in the country, but stated that he maintained his position with strength and caution despite a collusion of internal and external forces aiming to strip him of his rights.
Vargas confirmed his attacks on the National Organizing Committee of the Convention, arguing that most members were biased, "and adopted intolerance and belligerence as standard." Despite his harsh criticism of the process, he asked his followers to cooperate, without rancor and with detachment, for the PRD and for Hipólito Mejía to reach power in the upcoming elections.
He said he has not requested or negotiated anything, before or after the convention because he was not interested in the vice presidency or extending his tenure of the presidency of the PRD.
He claimed that he knows that the results announced by the Convention´s Organizing Committee did not correspond to the will of the majority of the PRD. "I will not be an obstacle for the party to find itself and be successfully involved in the upcoming May elections," he proclaimed.
Vargas criticized members of the Convention´s Organizing Committee, led by Emmanuel Esquea Guerrero, who said that rather than acting as impartial arbiters, the majority of its members leaned to one side, and “adopted as standard intolerance and belligerence, responding with denial of rights to our just claims peaked with decency and spirit of transparency for get the truth. "
In a packed room in the Hotel Dominican Fiesta, enraged PRD leaders listened to the proclamation of the president of the PRD. Vargas said that the party is going through a very delicate time and it is time to put an end to the crisis, to seek understanding and domestic unification.
"The party unity and tranquility of the country are above any personal claim, and has to be that way for every citizen motivated by a mission to serve society."
He insisted that its position remained high and cautious, demonstrating the existence of a plot of internal and external forces to strip him of his rights, intended to discredit his claims and record of service to the party and country. Vargas said that when they have one month and five days of the convention on March 6 that should normally choose their candidate, the opposition party "live today very delicate situation. "Never before I sacrifice the sole cause for the unity of the PRD," he said.
The president of the Convention Organizing Committee, Emmanuel Esquea Guerrero, commended Miguel Vargas Maldonado for his attitude calling for the unity of the Dominican Revolutionary Party and accepting the victory of former President Hipolito Mejia."I congratulate him because he took the attitude that we were waiting for, the day after the conclusion of the convention," said Esquea Guerrero.
He said "I think that speaks well of the Vargas, regardless of certain expressions and statements he made in his speech, I think the upsides of his speech are greater than the negative ."
Upon his expulsion, he said that it never happened, because the members that sought to do so had no legal status. The Commission will meet today to ratify the proclamation of former President Hipolito Mejia for the first of May.
In the last convention Hipólito Mejía, a former president, won, according to the bulletin number five, which was an irreversible trend, 53.43% against the 46.66% obtained by the PRD president, Miguel Vargas. Vargas's team reported alteration of the electoral roll to allow people from other parties to vote, mainly the ruling PLD and its ally PRSC.
