Whales off Cabarete beach

Their passage along the coast sparked great excitement among visitors and swimmers at Cabarete beach who appreciated the unexpected free show.
The whales passed in single file, easily visible from the beach, said Nelson Junior Almonte who was surfing near the spot where they suddenly appeared.
Whale watching is a popular pastime from January to March, especially further East towards Samana, but it is very unusual to see them off our coasts at this time of year. They usually come to feed in the bay of San Lorenzo then travel north again up the east coast of the US.
It is not known why this group of about 50 humpback whales came to swim along the North coast but their antics in the water about 600m from Cabarete beach were certainly enjoyed by everyone who saw them.
