According to the resolution 80-2009 of the National District City Council (DNA), taxi drivers have a period of 18 months to re-paint their vehicles.
The decision was announced yesterday at a meeting involving the Director of the General Directorate for Land Transport (DGTT), Tobias Rafael Crespo, the director of the Technical Land Transport Office (OTTT), Angel Segura, and representatives of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (AMET), the Office for the Reorganization of Transport (Opret), the Council of Regulation of Taxis (CART) and the National Confederation of Transport (Conatra).
Salcedo said that today (Friday) at 10:00 am the first consignment of 629 yellow cabs acquired by Conatra for its members will arrive at the port. This is the first batch of three thousand which will be coming to the country in the coming months.
Lives at risk
The mayor of Santo Domingo and Conatra president stressed the importance of taxis being properly identified, because it gives greater security to users and the owners themselves. Salcedo called for the public not to use taxis which are not in the official color because they put their lives at risk.
Also, Antonio Marte, president of Conatra, reported that of about 80 taxi companies serving the capital, over 75 are affiliated with the federation of transport. He said he accepted the change because he understands the benefit to both the user and the owner of the vehicle. "These vehicles will not be attractive to thieves, because they will be easily identifiable," he added.
