Young Man Robbed in Cabarete

On Friday, June 11th, a young adult Sosua resident joined friends for a few drinks at Unos in Cabarete. One of the friends was celebrating her birthday. Around 1:30 a.m. the majority of the group left to head home. One individual stayed behind to enjoy the beach for a few extra moments. The quiet calm of the ocean soon became an intimidating moment when a young woman (prostitute) sat down to befriend him! Moments after she sat down, within eyeshot of the local bars, her friend whom she introduced as local policia, joined their company and demanded money that she apparently owed him. When all the money this individual had was turned over (as opposed to getting his lights punched out) the friend suggested that the bracelet being worn was also necessary. This supposed policia was a big, beefy, intimidating character. In this circumstance no one was maimed or seriously injured, but talk about an opportunity to drive away business! If our young people and families cannot enjoy the restaurants and local life in Cabarete without the fear of being accosted, then the only paying customers will leave! Who is going to stand up and move these non-paying leeches off the only decent beach in the area for tourists and locals? Isnt prostitution illegal in this country? Where are the local business owners that put up with this, sacrificing paying patrons for the sake of the larger seedy community?

Last weekend a family of six, with five patrons of legal drinking age, were in Cabarete when a prostitute approached the father of the family as he was buying a rose for his wife. When their son walked up and suggested his dad wouldnt be interested, this prostitute suggested she was enough to entertain both father and son! Where does this aggressiveness stop? She wasnt spending money at the bar or buying food in the restaurant! From what was observed, she and her obviously watchful pimp were driving more paying customers away than they were generating. It is for this very reason that many resident friends of this author have chosen not to venture out for an evening in Cabarete or Sosua. There has to be a tremendous loss of revenue for the local businesses with so many full time residents choosing to eat and drink at home, when they would much prefer to be on the beach!  Does anyone care?
